Abstract
Introduction: Early childhood caries (ECC) is increasing rapidly and remains a serious public health issue. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is considered a current treatment in the world. The objective of the study was to evaluate the clinical intervention effectiveness of SDF 38% on 3-year-old children with ECC and S-ECC after 12 weeks. Methods: A controlled community intervention study was conducted on 168 3-year-old children with Early Childhood Caries (ECC) and Severe Early Childhood Caries(S-ECC) studying in Binh Chanh and Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh city. The group of children treated with SDF 38% and the control group with NaF 5% were devided according to the order of numbers. Characteristics of children's dental care at home were collected through face-to-face interviews with parents. Dental caries status was assessed through clinical examination according to ICDAS. Results: The total sample size was 168 participants, of which 58.3% were female. The majority of children used fluoride toothpaste, did not take a bottle, did not suck on food, occasionally drank soft drinks, and had an average oral hygiene status (DI = 1-1.9). There were 94 children treated with SDF 38% and 74 children treated with NaF 5%. The mean of s1-level decayed tooth surface decreased was 1.41. The rate of inactive teeth in the group of SDF 38% was higher than in the control group after 12 weeks of intervention. Conclusion: SDF 38% was effective in enhancing the hard tissue remineralization of teeth, preventing lesion development. Clinicians may consider the use of SDF 38% in the treatment and prevention of dental caries in children.
