QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG BREAST CANCER PATIENTS UNDERGONE IMMEDIATE BREAST RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY AFTER RADICAL MASTECTOMY AT HANOI MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN 2022

Abstract

Objective: Describe quality of life (QoL) among breast cancer patients treated with radical mastectomy combined with immediate breast reconstruction at Hanoi Medical University Hospital in 2022. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from August 2019 to July 2022 with 34 grade 1 or 2 breast cancer patients who had undergone radical mastectomy combined with immediate breast reconstruction. Evaluate the QoL with the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 toolkit of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer. Results: QoL score according to QLQ30: overall QoL was 73.3; in which emotional function had the highest score (85.8) and the lowest was cognitive function (79.4). QoL score on symptoms was 15.2, of which the three most annoying symptoms were fatigue, insomnia, and pain. QoL score according to QLQ-BR23: QoL of functions was 64.2, included: sexual function had the highest score (74.0) and the lowest was future perspective function (52.0). QoL score on symptoms was 17.9; about systemic side effects were 21.0; arm symptoms 21.9; breast symptoms 10.8. Conclusion: This result helps medical staff to have a preliminary assessment of the patient's QoL and thereby to choose appropriate solutions in communication, moral support, psychological counseling and assisting patients make the best treatment decisions.
