Abstract

Background: Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, recurrent disease, causing many complications and affecting the quality of life of patients. The disease tends to increase in Asia. There are many studies on the SCCAI score in the assessment of disease activity in the world, although currently in Vietnam, studies on this scale are still limited. Objective: To assess the severity of bleeding ulcerative colitis using the SCCAI score. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional prospective study on 33 patients with ulcerative colitis treated at Bach Mai Hospital and Hanoi Medical University Hospital from July 2020 to June 2022. Results: The mean age of the study group was 45.7 ± 15.7 (from 18-79 years old). Female/male ratio: 1:1.06. According to the SCCAI score, there were 13 patients (~39.4%) of severe severity, 15 patients (~ 45.5%) of moderate severity and 5 patients (~15.2%) of mild severity. SCCAI had a positive linear relationship with CRP concentration (r=0.37, p=0.035) and 2h erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r=0.42, p=0.016). SCCAI had the highest mean score for lesions in the left colon (6.0 ± 3.4) and the whole colon (5.1 ± 3.1). SCCAI score has a positive linear correlation with Mayo score (r=0.87, p < 0.001) and Surtheland score (r=0.83, p<0.001). Conclusion: The SCCAI score is a scale of clinical symptoms, simple and easy to use, to assess the severity of bleeding ulcerative colitis.
