OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGICAL DISEASES IN GERIATRICS AT FRIENDSHIP HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: The increase of number and percentage of geriatric population, as well as their age-related problems, is of great concern for society all over the world. Objectives: To overview the otorhinolaryngological diseases in geriatrics at Friendship Hospital. Patients and methods: A cross-sectional study based on the eHospital software was undertaken to recruit data of all geriatrics, aged 60 and above, who attended ENT department from January 2018 to December 2021. Results: Total patients studied were 15574. The male to female ratio was 2 to 1. The age 60-69 year group was 20.6%, 70-79 year group was 44.9%, 80 year and above group was 34.5%. The problems related to throat were 49.4%, to nose and sinuses were 21.2%, to larynx were 14.8%, to head and neck were 0.8%; in which the most prevalent diseases were chronic pharyngitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, acute laryngitis, otitis externa and laryngeal cancer, respectively. Emergency was 0,8%, in which the highest were pharyngeal foreign bodies and epistaxis. The problems were more in male than in female in all age groups. Conclusions: Inflammatory diseases were the most prevalent diagnosis among all otorhinolaryngological problems, in which pharyngitis, laryngitis and rhinosinusitis were highest.
