SCOPING REVIEW OF SURGICAL TECHNIQUES FOR INFERIOR TURBINATE HYPERTROPHY

Abstract

Objective: This review aims to evaluate the efficacy of turbinate surgery for the treatment of inferior turbinate hypertrophy (ITH). Methods: Using the PUBMED databases were searched with the MeSH terms. Only articles focusing on inferior turbinate reduction that evaluated efficacy without other rhinoplasty were included. Results: We collected 43 studies with 3810 patients. The ages of them ranged from 1 to 81 years at the time of surgery and were followed-up for a period of 2 months to 14 years. Outcomes were based on nasal endoscopy, questionnaires, VAS, NOSE, Rhinomanometry, acoustic rhinometry. Procedures such as total or partial, laser turbinectomy showed crusting and bleeding at higher rates. Radiofrequency and microdebrider turbinoplasty offer the best efficacy, almost no complications. Conclusions: Inferior turbinate surgery offers benefit and improves nasal obstruction in patients with ITH. Nowadays, there is a trend toward mucosal sparing and long-term effective techniques with submucous tissue removal.
