Abstract

Zinc deficiency and vitamin A deficiency are major health problems worldwide, especially in Vietnam. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 414 women aged 15-35 in Thuan Chau district, Son La Province, to evaluate zinc deficiency (ZD) and Sub-clinical vitamin A deficiency (Sub-VAD) status. The result showed that the prevalence of ZD and Sub-VAD were 88.2% and 3.1%, respectively, and marginal and sub-clinical VAD was 36.5%. ZD prevalence among women aged 25-35 years (91.7%) was higher than among women aged 15-24 years (84.6%), with a statistical difference. The mean serum retinol concentration, the prevalence of sub-VAD and marginal and sub-clinical VAD were statistically different between the two and the four age groups. The prevalence of ZD, the prevalence of sub-VAD and marginal and sub-clinical VAD were statistically different between villages (p<0.01). From the results, ZD is a severe public health concern and needs an efficient and effective intervention to improve zinc deficiency in reproductive-aged women in low-income areas.
