ATTITUDE ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF HANOI MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, 2021

Abstract

The study objective is to describe the attitudes about learning communication skills and its related factors of the first-year medical students at Hanoi Medical University in the academic year 2020-2021 and several factors involved. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 431 first-year general medical students. The results showed that students' positive attitude to learning communication skills was high (PAS score = 51.2/65) and negative attitude to learning communication skills was low (NAS score = 30.3/65). Students whose father is a doctor and students believed that communication skills were necessary for medical students were associated factors with attitude of learning communication skills. In addition, male students was more likely to have negative attitude towards learning communication skills, and students with relatives/acquaintances thought that communication skills were necessary for medical students was more likely to have positive attitude with learning communication skills. Students need to be communicated to raise awareness about the importance of learning communication skills. In addition, it is necessary to continue to practice communication skills continuously for students in the following school years until graduation.
