Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to estimate the prevalence of depression and describe its associated factors among the elderly population in Hanoi and Quang Binh in 2021-2022. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a stratified random sample of 312 elderly people from 8 communes in the two provinces, using the GDS-15 scale for screening and DSM-V criteria for diagnosing depression. Results: 7.6% of elderly people were identified with depressive disorders (GDS score at least 6, out of 15 possible points), and 3.8% of them were diagnosed with depression. The prevalence of depression was higher among those who have a lower socioeconomic condition, who have a poorer overall health status, and those suffering from recent life stressful events. Conclusion: Depression is a significant health problem in the elderly population. It is necessary to strengthen screening for early detection and improve mental and social support in order to reduce the burden of depression in the elderly.
