Abstract

Pregnant women who use e-cigarettes feel they are safer than regular smokes. However, the harmful effects of e-cigarettes, especially nicotine-containing forms, have not been elucidated. Therefore, we conducted this study to evaluate the effects of nicotine exposure in e-cigarettes on the development from the parent to the F1 generation in the Drosophila melanogaster model. The results showed that exposure to nicotine-containing e-cigarettes not only led to reduced motility and reproduction but also negatively affected the size and weight of the F1-generation fruit flies, from infancy to adulthood. These results suggest the need for further study of e-cigarettes in fruit flies as well as other models to elucidate the signaling pathways in the pathogenesis.
