Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the dimensions of the lateral thoracic artery (LTA) and offer an accurate account of its variability. Subjects and methods: The LTA was examined in 15 formalin-fixed Vietnamese adult human cadavers in Anatomy Department – University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city during the period between July 2021 and February 2022. Results: The average age was 68,4±12,6 years, the percentage of males was 80%.  LTA arose from the second part of the axillary artery (60%). The external diameter of the lateral thoracic artery averaged 1,98±0,43mm at its origin and 1,13±0,23mm at the muscle entry point. The mean length of the LTA was 124,78±21,40mm. Conclusion: The most common type was where the LTA arose from the second part of the axillary artery (60%) and subscapular artery (36,67%). Most of the LTAs are larger than 1,5mm (93,33%), can be preserved when harvesting the flap to increase the viability of the flap.
