Abstract

Objectives: Hypertension is the leading cause of death and cardiovascular disease. By selecting antihypertensive drugs in accordance with treatment guidelines, blood pressure can be controlled while treatment costs are reduced. This study examined antihypertensive drug use by insured outpatients at Le Van Thinh Hospital in 2021. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted by using retrospective data at Le Van Thinh Hospital in 2021 regarding the list of the antihypertensive drugs administered for insured outpatients treatment, as well as the total cost of these drugs. Results: A total of 169 antihypertensive drugs with 81 active ingredients were used in 2021 at Le Van Thinh Hospital. 102 drugs contained only one active ingredient, which accounted for 60.4% of total drug use and 57.7% of total drug costs. 42.3% of the drugs in the study were fixed-dose combinations, with Amlodipine 5mg paired with Atorvastatin 10mg being the most common. The majority of drug cost and quantity were accounted for by ACE inhibitors, receptor blockers, and beta blockers. In total, 169 antihypertensive drugs originated in 22 countries, of which 38.5% were domestic and cost 8.9 billion VND. A total of 38 brand drug products represented 22.5% of the total drugs used and 20.0% of the total drug cost. Conclusion: The results can help the hospital make informed decisions about hypertensive patients' drug procurement and utilization. As a result, budget allocation and drug utilization can be optimized in the upcoming years.
