Abstract

Objectives: to determine the prevalence and study some factors associated with sarcopenia in older patients with chronic heart failure. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 59 chronic heart failure patients aged 60 years or older, who were examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. All participants were evaluated appendicular skeletal muscle by Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA, Inbody 770) and were diagnosed with sarcopenia based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. Results: The proportion of women is 54,2%; mean age is 77,3 ± 8,0 (years). The prevalence of sarcopenia is 52,5% (with severe sarcopenia is 27,1%). Factors associated with sarcopenia were advanced age, low BMI. There was no statistically significant difference between left ventricular ejection fraction and NYHA classification for heart failure and sarcopenia. Conclusions: At least one in 2 older heart failure patients was diagnosed with sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is associated with advanced age, low body mass index.
