Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of Phaco emulsification surgery on diabetic patients at Ha Nam Eye Hospital. Patients and Methods: Clinical intervention study in 53 cataract eyes of diabetic patients from August 2021 to July 2022. Results: 1 week postoperative, 21 eyes (39.6%)  achieved the visual acuity >20/30, the number of eyes with visual acuity from 20/50 to ≤20/30 was 20 eyes, accounting for the 37.7% while  8 eyes had visual acuity from 20/200 to ≤ 20/70, accounting for 15.1%. The 4 remaining eyes had low vision acuity < 20/200. The intraoperative intraocular pressure decreased significantly compared to preoperative with p < 0.05. Some complications were recorded after surgery: corneal edema 26.41%, uveitis 16.98%, macular edema 3.77% and posterior capsular opacity 11%. Conclusion: Phaco emulsification surgery for cataract treatment in diabetic patients is a safe operation and vision improves well after surgery. The outcome of postoperative vision depends on many factors such as the duration of diabetes and the presence of diabetic retinopathy complications preoperative.
