Abstract

Background: Medical students are one of the largest and most important forces participating in the volunteer movement to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: Describe the willingness to participate in volunteer activities to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic of 5th-year students majoring in General Practitioner at Hanoi Medical University. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 435 5th-year General Practitioners, using self-completed questionnaires. Results: Most of students who are willing to participate in volunteer activities to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic (76.6%). Honored to contribute to common activities (97.8%); Patriotism and responsibility towards the country, community, and society (96.9%); The reward system and financial support (96.9%) are the main motivations for students to decide to volunteer. In addition, focusing on exams, in-house exam preparation (87.8%) and health problems, the risk of being infected and infecting the family (84.3%), and worry about lack of knowledge and skills (75,7%) are also some barriers to participation in volunteering against COVID-19 pandemic activities. Conclusion: Most 5th-year medical students are ready to participate in volunteer activities to launch and fight against COVID-19 if mobilized. That enthusiastic spirit deserves to be commended and encouraged by appropriate and timely reward regimes and policies.
