Abstract

Objectives: This study was aimed to investigate antibiotic prophylaxis and factors associated with adherence to guidelines for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis at Orthopedic Trauma Centre – Tam Anh Ho Chi Minh city General Hospital. Methods: A cross – sectional descriptive study was conducted on 260 medical records of patients in orthopedic trauma surgery at Orthopedic Trauma Centre from January 2022 to March 2022. The adherence to antibiotic surgical prophylaxis was based on the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health of Vietnam (2015) and Tam Anh Ho Chi Minh city General Hospital (2021). Results: The overall proportion of guideline adherence was 78.1%. The percentages of adherence to dosage and route recommendations were 100%, whereas that of adherence to prophylactic duration was 88.2%. Urgent surgery (OR = 0.15; 95% CI: 0.03 – 0.41) and endoscopic surgery (OR = 0.30; 95% CI: 0.13 – 0.68) were associated with low proportion of guideline adherence. Postoperative infections occurred in 5.0% patients, in which surgical site infection accounted for 0.8%. Conclusions: Further research is warranted to improve surgical antibiotic prophylaxis in orthopedic trauma surgery.
