Abstract

Objective: study the characteristics of CTscan imaging in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Subjects and methods: A comparing cross-sectional descriptive study in 55 patients with clinically suspected acute appendicitis, 25 of them were appendicitis on anatomical pathology,  undergoing emergency abdominal CT scan at VietDuc hospital from May to October 2022. Results: 16 men and 34 women, mean age was 41.42 ± 20.55 years old (from 5 to 83). CT signs of acute appendicitis included increased appendix diameter >6mm (100%), mean appendix diameter 10.02 ± 1.90 mm, thickening of appendix wall >2mm (84%), presence of an appendicolith (40,8%), presence of appendix lumen fluid (80%), thickness of appendix lumen fluid 4.08 ± 2.94 mm, air in the appendix lumen (24%), infiltration of peri-appendiceal fat (88.0%), enhanced thickening of adjacent peritoneum (92%). All of the above CT signs had statistically significant differences compared with the non-appendicitis group (p<0.01). Conclusion: Abnormal signes on CT are typical characteristics in the diagnosis of appendicitis.
