Abstract

Objective: Describe the imaging features of obturator hernia on computed tomography (CT). Patients and methods: All patients with diagnosis of obturator hernia on abdominal CT at Viet Duc University Hospital from September 2019 to January 2023 were included in this study. Results: 15 patients were included in the study; all patients were female, with median age was 83 years (48 - 92). Thirteen cases presented to the hospital with acute intestinal obstruction, abdominal pain, and distention. Two cases were discovered incidentally during the abdominal examination. All cases were diagnosed on preoperative CT. Obturator hernia due to a loop of small bowel was seen in 13 patients. Five cases presented with intestinal ischemia, and 3 of them presented with peritonitis. An emergency operation treated nine cases; two non-emergent cases were scheduled for surgery. The remaining four cases refused treatment due to severe conditions. There was three death among the surgical patients within 30 days after surgery. Conclusion: Abdominal CT plays an important role in diagnosing the cause and severity of intestinal obstruction, including detecting obturator hernia. Surgery is necessary in cases of acute intestinal obstruction due to an obturator hernia.
