TREATMENT RESULTS ON CYTOMEGALOVIRUS PATIENTS AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL FOR TROPICAL DISEASES

Abstract

Objective: To describe the treatment results of  ganciclovir therapy  on Cytomegalovirus patients  at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases. Subjects and method: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 58 patients diagnosed with CMV disease treated at the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases in 2 years from January 2020 to June 2022. Results: - The mean duration of ganciclovir treatment and hospitalization were 17,88 ± 7,29 and 31,76 ± 16 (days). - After treatment, 80,29% of patients had clinical symptoms response, and 20,41% did not respond. After antiviral therapy, the viremia eradication rate was 72,41% in blood and 72,22% in other specimens. There was no difference in the duration of treatment and clinical outcome between HIV and non-HIV patients. - Ganciclovir caused a statistically significant decrease in white blood cell and neutrophil counts after 21 days of treatment. Conclusion: Most patients with cytomegalovirus disease responded well to ganciclovir therapy, but close follow-up is required to detect and manage side effects.
