Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the Clinicopathologic Characteristics of gastric cancer in the elderly. Subject and Method: A study about Clinicopathologic Characteristics of gastric cancer in elderly who were operated with gastrectomies from January 2011 to  December 2020 at Friendship Hospital. Result: in 204 patients with 167 (81.9%) males and 37 (18.1%) females; female/male ratio: 1/4.5; mean age: 72.7 ± 6.5. Risk factors and associated: smoking 40.2%: hypertension 45,6%; cardiovascular diseases 23.5%; respiratory diseases 14.2%; diabetes 12.3%; ASA-II 75%. Clinical features: abdominal pain 80.4%; dyspepsia 74.5%; weight loss 45.1%; anemia 72.5%.  Location of carcinomas in the lower one-third, upper third and middle third: 77.9%; 5.9%; 4.0%; other site 11.3%. Tumor size ≥ 5cm: 55.4%. Macroscopic lesion: ulcerated, protruded and diffusely infiltrating ulceration type: 42.6%; 39.2% and 18.1%. Moderately differentiated; poorly differentiated and well differentiated: 37.7%, 34.8% and 26.5%. Adenocarcinoma 62.7%; signet-ring cell carcinoma 13.2%; mucinous adenocarcinoma 10.8%; papillary adenocarcinoma 7.8%. Depth of invasion T3 and T4: 66.2%. TNM Stage III and IV: 47.5%. Conclusion: These results indicate that, gastric carcinoma in elderly patients showed predominantly males with more comorbidities. Main symptoms of abdominal pain and dyspepsia. Predominance of tumor in the lower one-third with ulcerated and moderately differentiated type. The advanced stage still is high.
