Abstract
Objective: Describe and analyze some factors related to the knowledge of chemotherapy and self-care behaviors of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 281 breast cancer patients at Hospital K, using the L-PaKC and L-PaSC scales to assess knowledge of chemotherapy and self-care behaviors. Results: The median age of the study population was 44 (21-79) years. Patients diagnosed with stage III breast cancer accounted for the majority (40,9%). The majority of patients (66,5%) received combination chemotherapy. Based on the L-PaKC scale, the knowledge score of the study population was 79,1±10,9; with the highest score for knowledge of oral chemotherapy at 94,7±17,5 and the lowest for knowledge of side effects at 58,7±20,5. The self-care behavior score based on the L-PaSC scale was 73,1±17,2; with the average score for treatment adherence at 79,5±16,3 and the average score for symptom management at 62,1±28,7. Conclusion: The stage of disease and time of diagnosis are significantly associated with knowledge of chemotherapy (p=0.017 and p=0.009, respectively). Knowledge of chemotherapy and time of diagnosis are significantly associated with self-care behaviors p<0.001 and p=0.028, respectively).
