Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure massage combined with nursing care on motor rehabilitation in pediatric patients with sequelae of encephalitis. Subjects and methods: Clinical intervention, no control, comparison before and after treatment: 60 children ≤ 6 years old, diagnosed with sequelae of encephalitis after acute encephalitis, the patients underwent the period of acute encephalitis, who had mental and motor sequelae with motor paralysis manifestations. In addition, they might have consciousness disorders, swallowing disorders, round muscle disorders, disorders of autonomic nerves… The pediatric patients were given nursing care and acupressure massage with massage, rubbing, rolling, squeezing, stroking, acupressure and joint movements in the paralyzed limbs. Each procedure was done from 3 to 5 times on the paralyzed limb. Time of acupressure massage was from 20 to 30 minutes per time, one time per day, 5 days a week and during 6 weeks. Result: Degree of paralysis according to scale Henry score after intervention improved significantly, the average paralysis according to Henry decreased from 2.83± 0.87 before intervention to 1.3±0.75 after intervention, the difference was statistic significant with p < 0.05. The index of gross and fine motor development according to Denver II test were improved statistic significantly, with p < 0.05. In addition, acupressure massage combined with nursing care also has the effect of improving some clinical symptoms of pediatric patients with encephalitis sequelae: consciousness disorder, swallowing reflex disorder, round muscle disorder, dysarthria (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Acupressure massage combined with nursing care has the effect of supporting motor function recovery in pediatric patients with encephalitis sequelae.
