CHANGES IN THE VAS SCORE WHEN USING THE FEMORAL - SCIATIC NERVE BLOCK TO RELIEVE PAIN IN PATIENTS WITH LOWER LIMB FRACTURES IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT OF THAI BINH GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the changes in the VAS score and safety of femoral -sciatic nerve blocks guided by ultrasound to alleviate pain in patients with acute lower limb fractures at the emergency department of Tinh Thai Binh General Hospital. Research Subjects and Methods: Clinical observations were made on patients with acute lower limb fractures who received femoral - sciatic nerve blocks guided by ultrasound with VAS score >7 at the emergency department of Thai Binh General Hospital. Results: The study included 105 patients (67 males and 38 females), of which 50.5% were farmers, 22% were self-employed workers and 11.4% were laborers. Among these patients, 32.6% had femoral fractures and 63.8% of the patients had fractures in the lower leg bones, including 60 out of 105 patients with 2 fractured leg bones (57.1%) and 30 out of 105 patients with a fractured middle femur bone (28.65%). The VAS scores before and after the nerve block  5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes were 8.44 ± 0.55, 4.00 ± 0.76, 2.29 ± 0.49, 0.29 ± 0.45, and 0.27 ± 0.45, respectively. No side-effects or unexpected complications were observed. Conclusion: Femoral and obturator nerve blocks guided by ultrasound are a safe and effective method for pain relief, with a rapid decrease in VAS score 5 minutes after the nerve block. No unexpected complications or side-effects were observed
