Abstract

Objective: To investigate the mortality rate and related factors of mortality in patients with deep neck infections at Cho Ray Hospital. Methods: Retrospective and prospective study of 257 cases of deep neck infection treated at Cho Ray Hospital from 12/2019 to 12/2022 and multivariate logistic regression analysis to find out the prognostic factors for mortality. Results: The median age of the study population was 57 years old. The mortality rate was 6.6% (17/257). Multivariable logistic regression showed pneumonia (OR=7.49; p=0.02), sepsis (OR=145.79; p<0.001), and septic shock (OR=221.33; p<0.001) are independent prognostic factors of mortality in patients with deep neck infections. Conclusion: The mortality rate in patients with deep neck infections is still high. Complications of deep neck infections, including pneumonia, sepsis, and septic shock, are prognostic factors for mortality.
