THE HEALTHCARE NEED BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY FOR COLORECTAL CANCER PATIENTS

Abstract

Background: Determining the healthcare needs before and after surgery for colorectal cancer patients is one of the essential tasks of nurses, which should be monitored, evaluated, and improved to ensure the best medical service for the patient. Method: Cross-sectional study, collecting medical care needs before and after surgery of colorectal cancer patients, aged 18 years or older, at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City. Results: The study population had an average age of 61.8±14.0 years, mostly male. Most colorectal cancer patients are in stages 1 and 2. The proportion of patients with general needs in medical care and in physical is 81.7%, and 72.2% respectively. All patients have emotional and social care needs. The level of satisfaction for care has the lowest average score of 4.90±0.30 points, and the highest is 4.95±0.21 points. Conclusion: Colorectal cancer patients should be support their medical, physical needs, and especially mental care needs. The supporting of nurses at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City was rated as “very satisfied” by patients.
