FACTORS RELATED TO PREVENTION OF SURGICAL SITE INFECTIONS AMONG NURSES AT THE SURGICAL DEPARTMENTS, NAM DINH GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: To describe factors related to prevention of surgical site infections among nurses at the surgical departments, Nam Dinh general hospital. Subjects and research methods: Descriptive study on 52 nurses in 4 surgical departments of Nam Dinh general hospital, observing nurses’ practice based on checklists. Results: The percentage of nurses with good practice in preventing surgical site infections was 65.5%. Nurses over 30 years of age had a better practice than nurses under 30 years old, about 4.8 times. The men had 4.7 times higher practice in preventing surgical site infections than women. The nurses with college qualifications or university with practice was 2.9 times higher than nurses with intermediate professional qualifications. The nurses with more than 5 years of service experience had a better practice than nurses with less than 5 years of seniority about 4.5 times.  The nurses who was trained in the prevention of surgical site infections had 9.3 times higher than nurses without training. Conclusion: Despite being routine techniques, the percentage of nurses who did not have good practice in preventing surgical site infections was quite high, accounting for 34.5%. The factors related to prevention of surgical site infections were age, gender, professional qualifications, seniority and training.
