Abstract

Objectives: The evaluation of compliance, satisfaction, and colon cleanliness of outpatients who have been instructed to prepare their colon using a guide sheet. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 160 outpatients who underwent colonoscopy at the Functional and Endoscopy Department of Nguyen Dinh Chieu Hospital, Ben Tre Province, from December 2022 to February 2023. The patients met the sample selection criteria and agreed to participate in the study, which was conducted using routine colon preparation instructions provided in an instruction sheet. The patients were interviewed based on a pre-prepared questionnaire, and the degree of colon cleaning was evaluated using the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) by an experienced colonoscopy physician. Results: The compliance rate with colon preparation instructions was high (99.4%). The degree of colon cleaning according to BBPS was 6.47±1.51, with a colon cleaning rate of 83.1%. Most patients were satisfied with the nursing staff's colon preparation instructions, with an average score of 4.17±0.19. In addition, the study also found a correlation between patients' perception of the degree of colon cleaning based on their last bowel movement and the degree of cleanliness based on BBPS. Conclusions: Colon preparation in outpatients in hospitals is relatively good, with a high compliance rate with colon preparation instructions and a high level of patient satisfaction. The colonoscopy success rate was 83.1% with a BBPS score of 6.74 ± 1.51.
