THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN INTERNET ADDICTION AND POOR SLEEP QUALITY IN TRAN HUNG DAO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN DAK MIL DISTRICT, DAK NONG

Abstract

Introduction: Internet addiction causes severe consequences on physical health as well as mental health problems in students. In particular, there is a lot of evidence that internet addiction can cause negative effects on the sleep quality of internet users. Sleep is an important physiological process of the body. Therefore, it is necessary to find out the relationship between internet addiction and sleep quality of students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 368 adolescents enrolled in high schools in Dak Mil district, Dak Nong province, Vietnam. A structured questionnaire with questions about demographics, family and behavioral patterns was applied. Internet addiction was assessed using the s-IAT scale, and sleep quality was determined using the PSQI scale. Results: The findings revealed a pooled prevalence rate of 21.2% and 31.5% for internet addiction and poor sleep quality among high school students respectively. The association between internet addiction and poor sleep quality remained statistically significant with p<0,001 (PR=1.85 and 95% CI: 1.38 - 2.49) after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Conclusions: The rate of internet addiction and poor-quality control is quite high. Addiction to the internet and the more time spent using the internet, the lower the CLGN. Students need to limit their use of the internet too much, especially after 9pm.
