MOTIVATIONS AMONG NURSING STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE PHAM NGOC THACH TO VOLUNTEERS IN PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF COVID-19

Abstract

Background: Medical students, including nursing students, play an extremely important role in the prevention and control of COVID-19 pandemic, especially during the outbreak. Objective: To explore the motivation of Bachelor of Nursing students of the University of Medicine Pham Ngoc Thach who volunteered to participate in COVID-19 prevention and control in Ho Chi Minh City. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study of 132 nursing students from University of Medicine Pham Ngoc Thach who volunteered to participate in COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control. Result: In a total of 132 nursing students completed the survey, female participants were the most with 76.5%, and the majority live in inner cities (68.2%), and the average duration to participate in the pandemic prevention and control was 10.08 (±7.79) weeks. The squads for COVID-19 prevention and control with the highest percentage of students participating were the Team of screening and testing COVID-19 with 29.8%; the Team of Immunization Support with 28% and 16.7% in the Team of F0 Caring and Treatment. The main motivations of students to volunteer participating in COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control included Self-awareness to learn and experience (4.40 ± 0.58), Self-awareness to be responsible for the community (4.34± 0.85) and desire to have valuable contribution to the community (4.22± 0.66). Conclusion: The motivations of students to volunteer for COVID-19 prevention and control is very positive and meaningful, stemming from the desire to learn, experience and help the community. Promoting and raising students' awareness in community-oriented activities in general and participating in diseases or disasters prevention and control in particular that need to be paid attention to and integrated in the nursing education curriculum
