CHARACTERISTICS AND TEACHING STRATEGIES IN ONLINE CLASSROOMS: REFLECTION FROM NURSING LECTURERS IN PRIVATE NURSING UNIVERSITIES

Abstract

Background: The online classroom is quite new in Vietnam, and has been chosen as a method to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in the period of 2020-2021. The experience of teaching in online classes has not been thoroughly described in nursing education and training. Objectives: To explore the characteristics of online teaching and effective teaching strategies in online teaching at non-public nursing universities. Methodology: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted at three private nursing universities. Data were collected based on 12 semi-structured in-depth interviews using online communication. All data was recorded and taken notes, transcribed verbatim, sorted, and then analyzed in inductive content analysis. Findings: The characteristics of the online day are the sudden change in teaching strategies, lack of connection - interaction; and requires a high degree of adaptation. Effective teaching strategies include (1) Strategies related to the individual factors; (2) Strategies related to lecture content; and (3) Strategies for maximize teaching-learning activities. Conclusion: Although online teaching is new to nursing lecturers, they have found teaching strategies to improve quality. The experiences gained by the faculty are expected to support the implementation of online nursing education in the future.
