Abstract

Objectives: Describe knowledge about bronchial asthma of parents of asthamatic children who are examined and treated at the Vietnam National Children's Hospital and analyze some related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 209 parents of asthamatic chilren at the National Children's Hospital from December 2022 to April 2023. Results: 60.3% of parents had good knowledge about asthma. Knowledge about asthma triggers: weather changes (95.2%); physical activities (71.8%); interact with pets (67.9%), air pollutants and irritants (63.2% ); respiratory infection (47.8%). The percentage of parents who know the symptoms of bronchial asthma including cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, fatigue is 92.3%, respectively; 87.6%; 74.6%; 66.5%. Over 90% of parents of children with asthma know the preventing methods, such as avoiding triggers (90.4%); avoid strenuous exercise (91.4%); clean house (94.7%), medication use and follow-up compliance (97.1%). Conclusions: Parents' knowledge about asthma is quite good. There is a statistically significant relationship between education, occupation and asthma control with knowledge of asthma prevention.
