Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to analyze medication utilization among patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) having health insurance at District 8 Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City (BVQ8) for the period 2021-2022. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using electronic data retrieval of examination and treatment information for T2D patients at District 8 Hospital. The study sample included all patients with the primary ICD10 code = E11, having health insurance, aged >16 years, treated for at least 12 months at District 8 Hospital, and having at least one HbA1c measurement during the period 01/2021-12/2022. The analysis of medication utilization was conducted by examining the medication costs across different characteristic groups within the study sample and assessing the number of patients prescribed each selected medication or combination therapy. Results: The study sample comprised of 529 patients; the mean age was 61.6 (± 12.5) years; 58.0% were female; 68.6% had HbA1c HbA1c ≥7% at the data collection time. The total medication cost was 1.816,6 million VND, with T2D treatment drugs accounting for 59.9%, and insulin being the most expensive (29.5%). The average medication cost per patient over 12 months of T2D treatment was 3.4 (± 2.3) million VND. Biguanide + Sulfonylurea (SU) combination therapy was the most frequently prescribed (38.6% of patients). Conclusion: This study provided information on medication usage according to demographic and clinical characteristics, supporting the evaluation of cost and treatment effectiveness for T2D patients with health insurance at District 8 Hospital for the period 2021-2022.
