Abstract

Background: In the world, there have been many recent studies on the prevalence of hemorrhoids and related factors. In Vietnam, there is a lack of studies on epidemiology and public awareness of hemorrhoids. Objectives: To evaluate the incidence of hemorrhoids and the awareness of the disease, the factors related to the risk of disease and recurrence. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 1142 adults over 25 years old who answered the online questionnaire from March 2022 to April 2022 across the country. Results: Percentage of people with awareness of hemorrhoids: 81% (925/1142). Average age: 34.9 ± 8.5, male accounted for 49.5%. Prevalence of hemorrhoids: 34.7% (321/925), of which 76 % (244/321) were diagnosed by medical staff. 52.3% (168/321) had recurrent hemorrhoids 1-2 times (95/168), more than 3 times (73/168). People with diarrhea or constipation affected the risk with OR = 1.7 (p < 0.001). The lack of diagnosis from medical staff was associated with a high recurrence rate (more than 3 times) with an OR value of 2.0 (p = 0.023). Conclusion: Assessing the situation of hemorrhoids along with the influencing factors of the community's awareness of hemorrhoids helps to plan to limit the risk factors of hemorrhoids and recurrence.
