Abstract

Objectives: To investigate sleep characteristics, sleep quality and quality of life among outpatients treated for insomnia. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study from May 2023 to July 2023 on outpatients at least 60 years of age, being prescribed with medications to treat insomnia. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and EQ-5D-5L questionnaires. Results: All patients (n=116) had poor sleep quality. Mixed insomnia accounted for 75.0%. Nearly 2/3 of the patients reported sleep duration of less than 5 hours per night, and sleep efficacy of <65%. The dominant sleeping troubles were inability to fall asleep within 30 minutes, awakening in the middle of the night or early morning, and the necessity to go to the bathroom. Regarding life quality aspects, pain/ discomfort and anxiety/depression was found in about 75% of the patients. Conclusions: Despite being diagnosed and treated, sleep quality and life quality of elderly patients remains suboptimal. In addition to medication treatment, nonpharmacological approaches should be considered to improve treatment outcome.
