EFFECTS OF ETHANOL ON GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER MODEL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Ethanol is one of the addictive substances when abused. Previous studies have proven that babies born to mothers who drink alcohol during pregnancy can have a number of health problems, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) with manifestations: slow growth, small body weight, low weight, craniofacial deformity. Ranganathan et al. demonstrated that drosophila is sensitive to ethanol toxicity and produce symptoms similar to those of people with FAS. In this study, we used the Drosophila melanogaster model to evaluate the effects of ethanol on their growth and development. The results showed that Drosophila treated to ethanol at a concentration of 5%-10% before pupar leaving had a black larva phenotype and delayed opening the wings, the time to start maturation was 1 to 3 days shorter, and survival was reduced by 16% to 27%. Furthermore, when compared to the control group whose parents were not exposed to ethanol, the mean body weight reduced considerably. This finding demonstrates that the Drosophila melanogaster model can be used to investigate the harmful effects of ethanol abusse.
