Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the level of nurses’ knowledge and skills in providing health education for patients in clinical settings and determine some related factors. Methods and subjects: A descriptive study was conducted on 119 nurses at 11 clinical departments at Dong Da General Hospital from July 2022 to August 2022. Results: The average score for nurses’ knowledge was 8.5±1.1. The majority of nurses had great knowledge about health education and counseling accounting for 82.4%, good level accounted for 8.4%, and only 7.6% at average level and 1.7% at poor level. The average score for nurses’ skills was 5.8±1.8, with 11.8% of nurses having excellent skills and 15.1% of them having good skills when performing health education and counseling, however, 51.3% of nurses had poor skills with a score of less than 6 points. There was no relationship between knowledge level and skill level, nor was there found an association between the knowledge/skills of nurses and demographic characteristics. Conclusion: Nurses has good knowledge in providing health education, however, they lack of skills in performing the health education to their patients.
