INVESTIGATION ON RISK FACTORS OF INSOMNIA IN THE ELDERLY AT NGUYEN TRAI AND THONG NHAT HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To determine risk factors of insomnia in the elderly. Subjects and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 450 patients aged ≥60 years (225 patients for each group with or without insomnia) visiting outpatient departments at Nguyen Trai and Thong Nhat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. All patients were interviewed for factors causing insomnia based on Spiealman’s 3P model. Results: Mean age of insomnia patients was 70,4 ± 7,2 years and the percentage of female was 53,8%. Most participants (68,9%) were in married status. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that patient’s age, stress of health condition, arthritis, being affected by unfavorable environmental factors, daytime lying in bed for >30 minutes and excessive anxiety about insomnia at night were risk factors of insomnia. Conclusion: The elderly had several risk factors of insomnia. This may serve as a basis for developing non-pharmacological treatment approaches that are appropriate for the elderly population.
