NURSING STUDENTS’ CONFIDENCE LEVEL IN PRACTICING ENDOTRACHEAL INTUBATION AND RELATED FACTORS

Abstract

Introduction: Confidence is understood as believing in yourself and your abilities. Confident people are always eager to face and conquer all problems in life. As a result, they are more likely to accomplish their goals than ordinary ones. Confidence is one of the essential characteristics of nursing students, especially during clinical practice. Objective: Determining nursing students’ confidence level when practicing intubation and related factors. Objects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 72 3rd year (course 2020) and 4th year (course 2019) nursing students majoring in Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine at Pham Ngoc Thach Medical University. Result: The average score of confidence of nursing students when practicing intubation is 33,45 ± 0,554 points. The surveyed students’ levels of confidence in practicing intubation fall into 3 divisions: the low rate (5,6%), the normal rate (55,6%), and the high rate (38.9%). Nursing students’ confidence when practicing intubation is influenced by the factors of training program and teaching staff (p<0.05). Conclusion: The confidence of nursing students when practicing intubation is at an average level. The school and faculty should continue to enhance and apply new teaching methods to improve the students’ confidence.
