Abstract

Background: Scientific research plays an essential role in improving healthcare services, but the attitudes and barriers that significantly influence scientific research among Vietnamese pharmacy students are unknown. Objective: This study was intended to investigate attitudes and barriers to scientific research among pharmacy students in Ho Chi Minh City. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in February 2022 to administer a survey to 390 pharmacy students. Results: The mean scores of the students on attitudes and barriers were 49.0±6.1 and 32.0±4.2, respectively. Both the male and female students exhibited positive attitudes toward scientific research, but the latter had higher scores than the former (49.5 vs. 47.9, p = 0.045). The male students had a lower average score with respect to barriers than the female students (30.8 vs. 32.6, p < 0.001). The main barrier identified by the participants was the lack of skills and knowledge about scientific research. Conclusion: Pharmacy students hold favorable attitudes toward participating in scientific research, but many barriers affect such participation.
