Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the prophylactic effect of palonosetron and dexamethasone on nausea and vomiting in cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. Subjects and methods: using a controlled clinical trial design, pregnant women > 18 years of age with indications for spinal anesthesia for elective cesarean section were recruited at Hoa Binh Provincial General Hospital from January to July, 2023. Group P: 35 patients received 0.075mg of Palonosetron intravenously 5 – 10 minutes before spinal anesthesia. Group D: 35 patients received 8mg of Dexamethasone intravenously 5 – 10 minutes before spinal anethesia. Results: During surgery, the percentage of patients with nausea and vomiting in group D (22.9%) was higher than in group P (14.3%). After surgery, the proportion of patients with nausea -vomiting in group D (31.4%) was higher than the figure in group P (17.1%), the difference was not statistically significant with p>0.05. Only 1 patient in group D needed treatment for nausea and vomiting. There was no difference in adverse events such as hypotension, tremor, headache, arrhythmia, and allergy in both study groups. Conclusion: Palonosetron's prevention of vomiting and nausea proves more effective than dexamethasone for patients with cesarean section under spinal anesthesia.
