Abstract

Background: Recently, a multimodality combination in treating rectal cancer, especially in low rectal cancer, has been widely applied. The defecation and urogenital function of the patient is significantly deficient and prolonged, causing adverse effects on the patient's physical and mental health. This study aims to investigate the aspects that impact low-rectal cancer patients' quality of life. Methods: Prospective data collection, direct interview using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire and medical records on 83 patients. Evaluating the patient's quality of life with low rectal cancer before surgery as a primary endpoint. Moreover, identify factors that adversely affect the patient's quality of life. Results: Prior to surgery, the patient had a normal level of physical activity. However, the global health status decreased to a score of 46.3 ± 10.4. The social functioning and psycho-emotional status scores were relatively low, at 49.4 ± 22.2 and 52.9 ± 20.8, respectively. Furthermore, the patient experienced an increase in their insomnia scale, reaching 22.1 ± 23.4 and 34.5 ± 29.7 during times of financial difficulty. Conclusion: Patients with rectal cancer have a significantly poor quality of life before surgery and require supportive intervention. Additionally, the financial burden is a crucial factor that affects their quality of life. Therefore, multidisciplinary treatment is essential for those with low rectal cancer.
