Abstract

Background: Nowadays, the use of antibiotics, corticosteroids, and vitamins has been a great concern to Vietnam as well as other countries in the world. Inappropriate prescriptions of these kinds of drugs can be detrimental to the patient's health and increase the cost of medical examination and treatment, which creates a burden on patients, their families, and the community. Some studies have demonstrated that there are many relevant factors such as the prescriber, the patient, the treatment facilities, and so on leading to inappropriate prescriptions which have been happening in various locations all over the globe. Objectives: The percentages of inappropriate inpatient prescriptions of antibiotics, corticosteroids, and vitamins were determined at Ke Sach District Medical Center in Soc Trang province in 2022. At the same time, some factors related to the inappropriate inpatient prescriptions of antibiotics, corticosteroids, and vitamins were also researched. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study on 366 medical records that used at least 1 of 3 following drugs including antibiotics, corticosteroids, and vitamins of all inpatients in 4 different departments in the Department of Pediatrics, Department of Resuscitation and Emergency, Department of Internal Medicine, and Department of Obstetric Surgery - Reproductive Health Care. Indicators of the appropriate use of drugs were evaluated according to current regulations. Moreover, relevant factors were studied. Results: The percentage of medical records inappropriately prescribing medicine was 37.2%. The percentages of medical records inappropriately prescribing antibiotics, corticosteroids, and vitamins were 23%, 37.5%, and 30.8%, respectively. There was a correlation between gender, age, professional qualifications, and working time of doctors with inappropriate prescriptions. Conclusions: The percentages of medical records inappropriately prescribing antibiotics, corticosteroids, and vitamins were quite high (over 30%). Therefore, the management of drug use needs to be monitored more closely to contribute to the improvement of the quality of the health center.
