ORAL HEALTH STATUS, HYGIENE HABITS AND THE NEED FOR TREATMENT IN PATIENTS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTION

Abstract

Objective: Assess oral health status, and survey knowledge, attitudes, oral care behaviors and dental treatment needs of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. Research methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 160 patients with coronary artery disease, indicated for percutaneous coronary intervention, being treated at the Vietnam Heart Institute - Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi. from October 2022 to May 2023. Patients were examined and interviewed directly to record research indicators based on pre-prepared questionnaires. Results: The subject's tooth decay rate was very high (80.6%), while the tooth filling rate was relatively low, and the tooth decay and filling loss index was 5.3 ± 2.78. Poor periodontal condition with an average gingival index of 1.26 ± 0.65, average examination depth of 4.61 ± 1.6, average clinical attachment loss of 5.97 ± 2.19. The subject's oral hygiene status was poor with an average basic oral hygiene index OHI - S of 4.55 ± 1.2. Assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of research subjects, the average level of knowledge accounted for the highest percentage at 63.75%, the majority of subjects had good and average attitudes and dental care behaviors. mainly at average and poor levels (92.75%). The subject's need for dental treatment is high (80.6%). Conclusion: The oral disease condition of coronary artery disease patients indicated for percutaneous coronary intervention is very serious, their treatment needs are high. Meanwhile, the subjects' knowledge, attitudes, and oral care behaviors are still at an average or poor level.
