Abstract

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of controlling dental caries using Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) according to systematic review method. Materials and methods: A systematic review of data was conducted to assess the ability of SDF to halt the progression of dental of dental caries and prevent new caries when compared to other materials. The data were collected from articles, theses, and dissertations available on databases such as Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, and the library of the Hanoi Medical University in both English and Vietnamese. Results: Out of 2060 documents found, 15 studies were included in the systematic review after screening and exclusion criteria were applied. Among the 15 selected studies, 4 compared the effectiveness of SDF and 5% NaF in controlling dental caries, 4 studies compared SDF with Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART), 1 study compared SDF with AgNO3 25% combined with NaF 5%, 1 study compared it with interim restorative treatment (IRT), 1 study compared it with Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) combined with fluoride varnish (FV), 1 study compared two groups using different SDF concentrations and frequencies, 1 study compared it with a placebo, and 1 study compared it with a non-intervention group. The studies showed that SDF had significantly higher caries control rates compared to the placebo or non-intervention group, and it was superior to 5% NaF with statistically significant differences. In comparison to other material methods, it showed equivalent effectiveness. Conclusion: This study concludes that SDF is effective in controlling dental caries in both primary and permanent teeth.
