SLEEP CHARACTERISTICS IN PATIENTS WITH PARKINSON’S DESEASE

Abstract

Objectives: Describe sleep characteristics in patients with Parkinson’s desease. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 130 patients with Parkinson's disease examined and treated at the National Hospital of Geriatrics from August 2022 to July 2023. Results: The average age of the study subjects was 69.05 ± 7.86, with the proportion of female patients being 66.2%, whereas male accounted for 33.8% of the patient pool, the average age of onset of Parkinson's disease was 62,68 ± 8,72 years old, the mean duration of illness was 5,56 ± 4,80, most patients had less than 10 years of illness accounting for 82,31%. 90.8% of people with Parkinson's disease had sleep disorders, mainly having 1 or 2 types of sleep disorders. In the study, the rate of insomnia was for 76.15%, hypersomnia accounted for 3.85%, narcolepsy assessed on clinical manifestations accounted for 16.15%, the percentage of restless legs syndrome, nightmares and circadian rhythm sleep- wake disorders were 56,15%, 25,38%, 1,54% respectively. In insomnia disorder, there were 60.77% of patients having difficulty in sleep onset, 42.31% had difficulty in maintaining sleep, 32.31% had early-morning awakening, and 15.38% had complete insomnia. Regarding the characteristics of sleep in Parkinson's disease patients, the sleep latency was generally more than 1 hour, accounting for 52.3% of patients, the average number of awakenings per night is 1.79± 1.82, the total time of sleep per night was 5,2± 1,54 hours, sleep efficiency was mainly described as  very poor, accounting for 45.4%. The daytime manifestations of patients with Parkinson’s disease with sleep disorders included fatigue (36.44%), anxiety about sleep (53.39%), nervousness, headache (18.64%), dizziness (24.58%), reduced concentration (23.73%). Conclusion: Sleep disorders are common in patients with Parkinson's disease, mainly insomnia, in which difficulty in falling asleep and maintaining sleep are common clinical features. Besides, restless legs syndrome is common in people with Parkinson's disease. Daytime manifestations and emotional manifestations are common, affecting the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease.
