Abstract
Background: Chronic kidney disease poses a global public health challenge, with substantial economic implications for healthcare budgets. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study analyzes the direct medical costs incurred by hemodialysis (HD) patients in the Department of Nephrology - Dialysis at Thong Nhat Hospital in 2022. Results: Our analysis includes 44 HD outpatients. The cost of treatment/year for HD patients at Thong Nhat Hospital is 130,399,119 VND (119,572,241 - 141,511,275), of which health insurance covers 93.59%. Cost of dialysis represent the largest share of these costs, accounting for 59.51%. Furthermore, cost of drugs constitutes the second-largest component, contributing 35.63% to the overall treatment cost structure. Our findings indicate no statistically significant differences in treatment costs among patient groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study underscores the substantial economic burden carried by HD patients, particularly from the perspective of third-party payers such as health insurance.
