Abstract

Objectives: Describe the fall status and some factors related to the risk of falls in older patients with primary knee osteoarthritis. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 189 patients aged ³ 60 years old diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis according to the criteria of ACR 1991 who were being treated at the National Geriatric Hospital from August 2022 to June 2023. Results: Average age was 75.3±7.0, females accounted for 84.7%; 86.6% of patients had degeneration on both sides of the knee joint. 17.5% of elderly knee OA patients fell at least once in the past 12 months. 10.1% of patients had a fall and 7.4% of patients with knee OA had 2 or more falls. 61.4% of patients were at high risk of falling as assessed by the Timed Up and Go test. Multivariate regression analysis showed that age (OR=1,1), female (OR=2.5), and living in rural areas (OR=2.3) had a statistically significant association with the risk of falls. Conclusion: The rate of older knee osteoarthritis patients who had fall risk was high (61.4%) and was related to old age, female gender and living in rural areas
