Abstract

Objectives: To identify the prevalence and some associated factors of polypharmacy in older patients treated at the Outpatient Department, Ninh Binh Provincial General Hospital. Subjects and methods: Descriptive observational study on 370 older patients at the Outpatient Department, Ninh Binh Provincial General Hospital from August 2022 to July 2023. Polypharmacy was defined as the simultaneous use of 5 or more drugs in a day. Results: The mean age was 71.3±7.7 (year); females accounted for 50.8%. The rate of polypharmacy within one month before this visit was 41.4%. The rate of polypharmacy during this visit was 44.1%. The older the age, the higher the body mass index, the higher the polypharmacy rate, the difference was statistically significant with p < 0.05. The proportion of patients with frailty syndrome in the group with polypharmacy was statistically significantly higher than in the group without polypharmacy (p<0.05). Conclusion: The rate of polypharmacy in elderly out-patients treated at Ninh Binh Provincial General Hospital was quite high, and was associated with advanced age, high BMI, and frailty syndrome.
