Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is an important health issue for Vietnamese women. More attention should be paid to quality of life (QoL) in breast cancer patients because it is often worse compared to the general population. These patients may experience problems such as anxiety, fatigue, difficulty in sleeping, loss of appetite, financial hardship, etc., so improving QoL for breast cancer patients is a vital part in treatment strategy. Therefore, we conducted the study "Quality of life in the pre-operative period of breast cancer patients at Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital" to provide initial information about QoL in the pre-operative period of breast cancer patients. This study is considered as a basis for establishing support programs to increase QoL for breast cancer patients. Method: This is a cross-sectional study at Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital from January to December 2023. Inclusion criteria is early-stage breast cancer patients (0, I and II). The patient's QoL was assessed by using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. Data were processed and analyzed with SPSS 16.0 software. Result: A total of 120 breast cancer females participated in the study with an average age of 50.8 years. The average QoL score in functional, general and symptom domains was 87.2 ± 5.4, 74.9 ± 8.6 and 12.1 ± 5.4, respectively. Scores for the symptom domain ranged from 0.3 (diarrhea) to 41.4 (financial difficulties). Characteristics of breast tumour do not affect QoL domains of EORTC QLQ-C30 scale. Conclusion: The pre-operative QoL of breast cancer patients in our study was best in terms of physical function, followed by role function. The area of financial difficulties has the most negative impact on QoL of such patients. In addition, emotional function, social function and insomnia also seem to be more seriously affected, hence healthcare professionals should pay more attention to early detection and treatment of these disorders to improve QoL in breast cancer patients.
