SCHOOL BULLYING AND MENTAL HEALTH AMONG SECONDARY STUDENTS IN HANOI

Abstract

Objectives: The study was conducted to examine the situation of school bullying and analyze the relationship between school bullying and mental health among secondary students in Hanoi. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study using a school bullying questionnaire and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ 25). There were 2344 children (50.8% male), aged 12–16 years old, who studied in three secondary schools in Hanoi and participated in the study. Results: 13.1% were victims of school bullying, 6.4% bullied others, and 3% were both victims and perpetrators. There was a significant difference between boys and girls in the rate of participation in bullying. There was no grade- level difference in bullying experiences. Being bullied highest correlation for being bullied was peer problems, bullying was conduct problems. Hyperactivity and conduct problems were significantly higher in the group of children who bullied others (p<0.05), and emotional problems were higher in the group of children who were victims (p<0.05). Conclusion: School bullying is a common phenomenon among adolescents, and it has a correlation with mental health problems. There is an urgent need for effective interventions from families, schools, and society to detect and prevent school bullying.
