Abstract

Objective: To determine the current status of knowledge and attitudes about prevention of injuries caused by sharp objects of students at Hanoi Medical University, Campus in Thanh Hoa in 2023 and identify some related factors. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional description was carried out on 440 university students studying at Hanoi Medical University, Campus in Thanh Hoa. In which, nursing students are studying in 2nd and 3rd years, medical students in 4th, 5th and 6th years. Results: 74.77% of students were vaccinated against hepatitis B, 27% of students reported being injured by sharp objects . There are 69.8% students who have achieved knowledge and 30.2% of students have not achieved the knowledge of prevention of injuries caused by sharp objects. In which, the low percentage of students who answered correctly about the safe needle closure method was 5. 9%, 8.9% of students know how to handle sharp objects safely after injection and 35.9% of students answered correctly about the maximum capacity of sharps container. There was a difference in knowledge with some characteristics of the study subjects such as: gender, students and vaccinated against hepatitis B (p<0.05). There was a difference in the attitudes of students towards gender, vaccinated against hepatitis B and hurt by sharp objects (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between students' knowledge and attitude about prevention of sharp objects. Conclusion: General knowledge on prevention of injuries caused by sharp objects of students at Hanoi Medical University, Campus in Thanh Hoa 69.8%. Students who have good knowledge of preventing injury will have a positive preventive attitude.
